Hello, I'm Ben.

I'm a Manchester-based photographer, camera operator and videographer. Most of my work is in live events, music and corporate production, although I've ended up doing a fair bit of everything over the years.

I've worked on productions across the UK, Europe and Asia, covering everything from small grassroots arts projects to international sporting events and major music festivals.

I've always been drawn to photography. My first camera came from Canon's outlet shop through an early version of eBay. By some stroke of luck, they accidentally sent me a much better camera than the one I'd ordered.

I enjoy the variety. One week I might be photographing a conference in Manchester, the next operating a camera at a festival or filming for a television production on the other side of the world.

A bit about the work

Live events make up a big part of what I do. There's something I really enjoy about working on a production where everything's happening in real time and you've got to be ready for whatever comes next.

I've worked with some brilliant people along the way, including Manchester orchestras such as The Hallé, Manchester Camerata, Manchester Collective and the Northern Film Orchestra.

Alongside the music work, I've covered conferences, exhibitions and international sporting events, working with agencies and production teams of all shapes and sizes.

I'm equally happy working independently or as part of a larger crew.

Working together

I like to keep things as straightforward as possible.

Being calm on a shoot is important to me, particularly when there's a lot going on. I'm happy taking direction, getting stuck into the technical side or helping organise things when needed.

Over the years I've built up a network of camera operators, photographers and other production people who I really enjoy working with.

For bigger jobs I can bring a team together, but there's no need to make a production more complicated than it needs to be.

And I'm always happy to travel. If I can get there with a flight and a hire car, I'm generally up for it.

Passing it on

Alongside production work, I teach at the University of Salford, sharing some of what I've picked up over the years with students getting into the industry.

I also try to give newer creatives opportunities to come along on shoots and get some practical experience.

Making the industry more accessible matters to me. I'm a big believer in sharing opportunities and helping other people get a foot in the door.
